As stated on the main story page, The Vampire Hunter is currently undergoing major revisions.
When I first began writing TVH, I was a pantser and just wrote whatever I saw happening next without that much thought to where the story was going. Things happened and the characters reacted, then more things happened, which led to more reactions and so on, and I discovered the characters and the world as I went along.
Since that time, I've learned a lot more about writing and once I came up with some specific things that I wanted to write towards, I realized there was a lot missing from the story. I still haven't come up with a concrete ending (I'm working on it), but there was a bunch of stuff I saw happening behind the scenes that never made it into the story, so that's part of what's going into the revisions.
Also, through reader feedback and my own critiquing sessions, I've realized there are a lot of things in the story that should've been put in much earlier, but they were inserted later because that's when I thought of them while writing the story.
So, I've completely rewritten the beginning of The Vampire Hunter to establish the world and the characters much better, so that by the time you get to what is currently the opening scene, it actually has some real weight behind it, whereas I don't think the currently posted version has that.
It's still a great scene and a great opening, but you're meeting the characters for the first time there, so there's no context. It's like expecting someone to feel tension throughout a story, but only telling them about the ticking time bomb in the last chapter. Without that context, a lot of meaning is lost. Like I said, I still think it's a great scene, but it's not where I think the story needs to start.
What all this means is that The Vampire Hunter is still very much a work-in-progress and the free chapters available on the site are my first draft. It's a solid first draft, but it's not the final version.
To be clear, I'm not rewriting the story quite to the extent that I'm doing for Lights of Life. This is more about adding scenes to support stuff that's going to happen later and moving later informational content to happen earlier where it makes more sense to learn about it rather than taking a scene and rewriting it from scratch. So the majority of the text and most of the events are happening pretty much the way they did in the original version.
However, the revised version (10 chapters) has only been written up to the start of the warehouse raid (which picks up in the currently posted Chapter 3), so until I can replace every chapter on the site with the new version, I'm leaving the old one up (it will also remain available afterwards as an ebook download for those who prefer it over the new version).
Once I get the revisions finished and catch up to what's posted online, I'll be able to start posting new chapters as I complete them.
If you do decide to take a chance on The Vampire Hunter, you'll of course get updates on my progress as I make those new revised chapters available (either privately on Google docs or when I post them on this site), but you'll also get instant access to the current version, which is still very good according to my readers.
Honestly, their enthusiasm for The Vampire Hunter has made me a little nervous about changing any of it, but to do what I want to do with the rest of the story, I had to make those changes, so hopefully you'll like the new version as much as I do.
